Expert tips

  • Don't use just any potting soil for your potted plants. They need a rich potting mix with good water retention to ensure optimal watering and fertilization.
  • Change your plants' potting soil when it no longer retains water, is very compacted, smells rotten, becomes very light in colour or pulls away from the sides of the pot. Always use fresh potting soil.
  • Repot your plants when the roots begin to grow out of the drainage holes or become entwined in the pot, filling almost all the space. Choose a pot that has been cleaned and disinfected, is one or two centimetres larger in diameter than the old one, and has drainage holes.

FAQ

All you need to know for dazzling plants!

Do all plants thrive in the same potting soil?

Most foliage and tropical plants thrive in a rich, well-aerated potting mix that retains water well without becoming waterlogged, like our potting mixes. Other plants require specialty mixes that meet their specific needs. This is particularly true for cacti and succulents, orchids, and plants that prefer acidic soils, such as heathers, rhododendrons and azaleas.

Should I fertilize my plant if I've just changed its potting soil?

It's best to wait until the plant has acclimated to its new environment before fertilizing a newly transplanted plant. This gives it time to adapt to its new surroundings. Furthermore, our potting mixes contain organic matter that will feed the plant and support its growth during this period.

How do I know if my plant needs to be repotted?

A plant should be repotted when its roots grow out of the drainage holes or become entangled inside the pot, or when its weight (especially for larger plants) destabilizes the pot. It's also time to change the potting mix when it no longer retains water, dries out or pulls away from the sides of the pot. If you're repotting, choose a container with a diameter slightly larger than the old one.
