Expert tips

  • It may be necessary to fertilize plants grown in potting soil containing slow-release fertilizer after 6 to 8 weeks, especially for heavy feeders like tomatoes. Annuals that flower profusely throughout the summer, such as geraniums and petunias, as well as summer-flowering bulbs like dahlias, should also be fertilized regularly.
  • Change the potting soil when you acquire a new plant. By changing the soil and cleaning your plant thoroughly, you reduce the risk of spreading insects to your other plants. Take this opportunity to check the roots. Cut off any blackened, dried-out or rotten parts.

FAQ

All you need to know for dazzling plants!

Can I use an outdoor potting soil indoors?

Outdoor potting soils can be used indoors. However, when growing in pots, it's important to choose a potting mix, as it contains ingredients that provide better water retention, which is essential for growing plants in containers, both indoors and outdoors.

What is the advantage of a slow-release fertilizer?

Slow-release fertilizer gradually releases its nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) over several weeks or months. This provides consistent and sustained nutrition, which is perfect for vegetable plants.

Why doesn't my potting soil retain water?

If you used fresh potting soil with a good water retention capacity, it's possible that your potting mix has completely dried out due to insufficient watering. To restore its moisture, soak your pot in water until the soil is fully rehydrated. Then, allow any excess water to drain through the drainage holes.
